Abbie Cornett was born in Omaha, Nebraska on August 22, 1966. Abbie’s spent her formative years learning the values of civic duty and hard work from her mother, Mary Cornett, a retired Omaha City Clerk with over 50 years of service to the city.
She was educated in Omaha schools and received her high school diploma from South High School in 1984. She then attended The University of Nebraska at Omaha and Bellevue University paying her way often with various public service jobs, including a position at the Omaha Housing Authority.
Abbie became an Omaha Police Officer in November of 1992. While on the police force Abbie served the community as a patrol officer, narcotics officer, DUI instructor and firearms instructor. While serving on the Department she met her husband Mark Stranglen, a Criminalist with the Omaha Police Crime Lab. Mark and Abbie were married on September 13, 1997 and are the very proud parents of three girls, twins Victoria and Madison and their youngest Cameron.
In June of 2002, after ten years of distinguished service Abbie suffered an in-service injury and retired from the Omaha police force. Looking to the future Abbie made the decision to further her education and attended Bellevue University and the University of Nebraska at Omaha.
Eventually, Abbie decided to serve her community by running for the State Legislature and was honored to become a representative for the residence of Nebraska District 45 in 2004.
Senator Cornett currently serves as the Chair person of the Business and Labor Committee and also serves on the Revenue Committee, Urban Affairs Committee, Developmental Disabilities Special Investigative Committee, the BRAC task force and the Midwest Interstate Passenger Rail Compact Commission. She has also served on the General Affair’s committee and Rules Committee.
Senator Cornett is also a member of the Bellevue Chamber of Commerce, Altrusa, Optimists, Nebraska Association of Women Police (retired status), Fraternal Order of Police (retired status), Council of State Governments, National Council of State Legislatures, Executive Task Force on Immigration with the National Council of State Legislatures, the American Legislative Exchange Council, and the Alliance for Plasma Therapies.
